Running back Thomas Jones is unhappy in New York.  Jones lead the Jets in rushing last season with 1,312 yards and 13 touchdowns.  Jones is slated to make $900,000 this year.  The 30 year old will be entering his 11th season, and

wants to make more.  He skipped the Jets voluntary workouts and is making noise about a hold out.  Now, he may just want out.  The back field may be getting crowded and the cash may be getting short.

The Jets are negotiating a contract extension with their change of pace back Leon Washington.  Washington is 4 years younger than Jones, and is more of a 3rd down and passing down back.  In addition, the Jets started day two of the draft by trading 3 picks to Detroit to get the first pick in the third round.  They used that pick to draft Shonn Greene, running back out of Iowa.  Greene was the Doak Walker Award winner last season as the nation’s best collegiate runner.  He was also the only back to break the 100 yard marker in every game his team played last season.  The Jets took quarterback Mark Sanchez of USC in the first round of the draft, and he will be given every opportunity to win the starting job because the other qb’s on the roster (Kellen Clemens and Erik Ainge) have little NFL experience.  No matter who wins the starting qb job, the Jets will be pounding the football.  And that means Greene.

Greene was the work horse at Iowa last season. He carried the ball 307 times for 1,850 yards.  That’s a 6 yard per carry overage over 13 games.  Contrary to popular opinion, he can also catch the ball.  True, he did only have 8 receptions last year, but that was because Iowa featured tight ends for check down throws.  His 24 year old frame can take much more punishment than Jones.  The Jets will keep Jones, but only for the current salary.  His work load will diminish as Greene takes over more of the carries.  If Jones decides to hold out Greene will be there to fill the void.
